The urgency of climate change and the need for rapid carbon emission reductions has been recognised by governments and businesses across the world.

However, it should be noted that a significant amount of that awareness has been brought about by the passion and focus of school children, primarily through the ‘School Strike for Climate’. This has led to schools wanting to lead the way on climate change action. The Grange School wants to be a leader in this space and is using Minimum’s bespoke tech solutions is able to understand it’s carbon impacts and significantly reduce them over time.

The Story of Grange School

The Grange School is a co-ed independent school in the heart of Cheshire. The school’s focus is on embracing and being immersed in life both inside and outside the classroom. The relationship between the staff and the students is warm and welcoming, this is where sustainability and the passion from the students is motivating The Grange School to becoming a leader in the space.

The opportunity for The Grange School to automate their carbon emission calculation and tracking

To become a net zero school, The Grange School needed a way of accurately calculating a baseline carbon footprint for their own operations and the footprint of the whole value chain. Schools have a complex value chain where the majority of emissions can fall outside the usual heat and electricity the buildings use, for example the goods and services that a school purchases and the commuting of both staff and pupils. Understanding these emissions means collecting the data, turning this into a carbon footprint and then tracking the footprint over time.

Minimum set The Grange School up with the following to help this:

  • Minimum helped set up internal processes to collect data through an online portal system. This helped assign data collection responsibilities and tracked which data was outstanding.
  • Minimum used bespoke tech solutions to automate the calculation and tracking of The Grange Schools’ own operational emissions and the emissions of the value chain.
  • Minimum set up a results and reporting dashboard which allowed The Grange School to analyse their footprint on a regular basis and develop a strategic carbon reduction roadmap.
